Nike SB secure their first Dunk collaboration of 2023 with Pawnshop Skate Co., the Southern Californian skate shop servicing the needs of Covina’s locals since 2010. Pawnshop is owned and run by Anthony Piscopo, father of Donovon, and got its name after he pawned a treasured family heirloom in order to get his son his first skateboard. That one seemingly small gesture proved itself a catalyst for Donovon’s success, breaking onto the scene in 2009 with a shared part in Zero’s Strange World video alongside all-time greats Jamie Thomas and Elissa Steamer, enjoying a short stint as part of Alien Workshop’s golden generation and featuring in Nike SB’s Chronicles Vol. 2, and finally finding a permanent home at Hockey as one of the foundational flag posts for the brand.
Donovon is an integral part of Pawnshop’s prosperity and an omnipresent ambassador for Covina’s growing skate scene, and his deep entrenchment with Nike SB over the years has borne fruit in the form of a collaborative Dunk High with his father’s store. One of the city’s slogans is “Where Friendship is Traditional”, so a link up between Pawnshop and Nike SB, who are so dedicated to rewarding those who contribute the most to their communities, was only natural.
Pawnbroking can be traced back to the earliest recognised civilisations and first became popular in Britain during the 13th Century. Over 800 years later, the Pawnshop x Nike SB “Old Soul” Dunk High arrives on our shores, packed with more gold than a pair of Pat Butcher earrings. Offered the opportunity to use an original SB Dunk mould, Pawnshop present a pair of high-tops crafted with premium leather and a classic construction sporting a slimline canvas tongue.
Packed with intricate detailing, the Old Soul Dunk reveals its true colours as it is worn in. The sleek and durable leather of the toe box and side Swooshes wears through to expose a glorious gold, which matches custom Pawnshop embellishments throughout, including at the branded leather tongue tab and rubber eyelet “wings”. The shoe comes complete with three lace options, all with gold aglets to complete the elegantly opulent aesthetic.
The shoe’s inner affords the foot the same comfort expected of any Dunk offering, coated with creamy gold suede for cushioned support up from the heel and through the ankle, and is finished with a removable Zoom Air sock liner for impact dampening and spongy softness. The shoe’s milky white midsole adds structured comfort and provides a shot of contrast against the black and gold upper, whilst the iconic Dunk outsole serves up a steely grip for incomparable traction.
